  9. Heidelberg Castle

    Built in the 13th century, served as the residence of the Electors Palatine. Expanded into a magnificent Renaissance castle in the 15th and 16th centuries and was an important political center. Heavily destroyed in the 17th century during the Thirty Years' War and the Palatinate War of Succession. A lightning strike in 1764 caused further damage, which is why the castle was never fully rebuilt. In the 19th century, the ruin was rediscovered by artists of the Romantic era and is now one of Germany's most famous landmarks.
